An Ode to My Mother in This AI Era
When my mother died, she left no instructions. A sudden heart attack, no warning — and the weeks that followed were the worst kind of detective work, done while grieving. (I wrote about that here.)
A seed was planted in my head ever since: how do I stop the same thing from happening to the people dear to me? The recent passing of a close friend, and my own struggle with a failing business, became the catalyst that finally made me act.
The gap I kept noticing
On my own journey into AI, I realised something: most people just skim the surface of it. They don't see the potential it holds, or what it can unlock. AI is moving so fast — all the jargon, all the noise — that it only compounds the problem.
The stars aligned in a strange way. I suddenly had the time, and a dire need for a distraction in the middle of the chaos. The more I dug, the more I saw a real gap between what today's digital-legacy tools offer and what I actually wanted to build.
That, ladies and gentlemen, is why the Tangerine Home system was born.
What it is
An AI companion. Something that eases the learning curve — carrying you from beginner to someone who can put an AI to work efficiently, like having a butler that handles the simple daily tasks.
It archives your documents, receipts, letters and statements. It manages your calendar and sets your reminders. And most importantly, it gives you a way to leave a proper legacy for your family — avoiding the very situation I was thrown into. An estate of your digital life: properly recorded, kept private, and released to your loved ones when they need it, not weeks too late.
The Vision
What I envisioned goes further than what most people picture when they hear "home AI" or "AI agent".
I believe the day will come when a self-hosted AI server at home becomes as common as an internet router or a family NAS. When that day comes, the Tangerine Home system truly shines — with security, privacy, and locally-deployed AI making token cost negligible. Everything under your own roof. Think of Iron Man's Jarvis: one quiet presence that rolls the whole household into one. That's not science fiction anymore.
For now, at least during the beta phase, I will be hosting it on my own server for family, close friends and invited beta testers. Eventually, this system will fulfil its full potential on your own home server.
The point
What I'm striving to build isn't an AI agent that claims to do everything and dazzles in a demo, then falls apart in real life — the nightmare stories of getting hacked, the security holes, the cleanout of important data and emails.
I believe the things that are genuinely useful should be invisible. Quietly getting the job done. The kind of thing you only really feel when it's suddenly not there.
